About This Film
Produced in 1963, this film explains the theory and method of preventing dental disease simply and effectively. ‘Secrets’ was made for the express purpose of showing in a dental office. The simple fact is that by cleaning ones mouth properly once a day before retiring to bed, the need for restorative dental service can be virtually eliminated.
How Can Preventing Tooth Decay Still Be A Secret?
In 1963, the Society for the Preservation of Oral Health produced an audio-visual slide show to help dentists teach their patients the causes of dental caries, or tooth decay and periodontoclasia, or gum disease.
The Society is made up of dentists practicing preventive methods developed by Charles C. Bass, M.D. Their goal is to teach their patients the importance of personal oral hygiene. After all, the root of the word ‘Doctor’ is Teacher. The dentists of the Society that authorized this A/V presentation knew that getting the word out was important.
A serious commitment has to be made on the part of the patient to properly brush and floss every night before retiring. Dr. Bass put out a paper to guide the teaching of his method of personal oral hygiene. The Society dentists would spend time with each patient, showing them the secret little world living in THEIR mouth.
Dr. Robert Jones, the founder of POH and also a founding member of the Society would go so far as telling his patients he could not in good conscience be their dentist if they continued to show up for checkups with evidence of improper and inconsistent cleaning.
Knowledge is power, and understanding the cause of caries is essential, and easy for anyone who wants to learn. Anyone who wants to keep the smile they were born with.
No toothpaste, mouthwash, fluoride or harsh chemicals needed.
Maybe a little salt or baking powder.
Simple daily disruption of the bacterial plaque is all that is necessary to be rid of cavities and gum disease. For good.
So, get some dental floss and let’s follow Judy as she learns from her preventive dentist “The Secrets of the Little World”.
